PANDA- Not Just A Bear
PANDAS, not just a cute little bear anymore…
What is PANDAS? PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) occurs when the strep infection causes misdirected immune response in the child’s brain that causes inflammation. The inflammation or swelling in the brain can cause the child to exhibit life changing symptoms. These symptoms can include personality changes, anxiety, declines in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating, tics and symptoms of OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
Does your child get Strep often?
Has your child’s appetite changed lately? Eating too little or refusing their favorite food.
Has your child’s behavior suddenly changed with little to no explanation? Mood swings or regression.
Does your child make uncontrolled movements that seem to be unusual and out of the ordinary? Repetitive noises. Pulling of hair. Blinking of eyes.
Does your child say random things with no explanation?
Does your child worry a lot?
What can be done to help my child if they have been diagnosed with PANDAS?
Cognitive Behavior Therapy can help you and your child handle the symptoms of PANDAS. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is used to restructure thoughts that can change unwanted behavior. PANDAS does not only affect the child diagnosed with the disease but may impact the entire family.
